FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Microsoft Dataverse?

Dataverse is the data platform behind the Power Platform. It stores data in tables with typed columns, relationships, business rules and role-based security, and Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages and Copilot Studio all read and write it.

Should I use Dataverse or a SharePoint list?

A SharePoint list is fine for simple apps and smaller data. Dataverse is the better choice for related tables, row-level security, large data and business-critical apps. Our Dataverse vs SharePoint list tutorial compares them side by side.

Do I need a premium license for Dataverse?

Using Dataverse from a canvas app or a cloud flow needs a premium license, such as Power Apps Premium or Power Automate Premium. Dataverse for Teams is the exception: it is included with many Microsoft 365 plans, with lower limits.

Can I move SharePoint list data into Dataverse?

Yes. You can create a Dataverse table from a SharePoint list, copy the data with a dataflow, or import a CSV or Excel file. The Tables, views and importing data topic shows each method step by step.

How do I move Dataverse tables to another environment?

Put your tables, apps and flows in a solution with your own publisher, export it as managed, and import it into the target environment. Our Dataverse solution tutorial walks through the whole process.
