As per the latest news from Microsoft, there is very good news for real Office 365 developers. According to Microsoft, Now there will be no 1-year subscription through Office 365 developer program, rather Microsoft is coming up with a new model that enables a perpetual renewal of your developer subscription.
As per the new model:
- You can get a free Office 365 developer subscription with 25 user licenses to use to build your solutions and it will remain active for as long as you’re actively developing and deploying solutions.
- No more rip and replace after one year.
- If you are an active developer, your subscription will be renewed every 90 days vs expiring every year.
Office 365 developer platforms areas are:
- Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint web add-ins
- Microsoft Graph
- Microsoft Teams
News for the existing users:
If you have a renewable subscription, when your one year is over, you will be renewed based on your activity level and transitioned to the new 90-day model.
So Any member who creates a new subscription after April 3rd will automatically have a 90-day expiration period with activity-based renewal.

Microsoft released a developer program, specially designed for developers who can build solutions for Office and Office 365 and can be used across desktop, web, and mobile platforms. Open source developers can create intelligent, powerful and connected solutions which help organizations and customers to do more and explore more.

Below are a few benefits of using Office 365 developer program:
- Through Office 365 developer program, you can have a one-year FREE Office 365 developer subscription, after which you can use Office 363 Enterprise E3 license features of Office 365 and SharePoint Online.
- Office 365 developers can access online office 365 developer training and also they can have an in-person discussion with Microsoft engineers.
- Office 365 developers can attend local developer community events organized by various Microsoft MVPs and also can get chances to win tickets to Microsoft conferences and industry events.

Join the Office 365 developer program (Steps)
Now I will explain you steps by step with screenshots how you can join the Office 365 developer program.
To join the Office 365 Developer Program, At first, make sure you will have a Microsoft Accounts or Azure Active Directory-enabled email like “outlook.com”, “hotmail.com” etc.
To join the Office 365 developer program, click on the below URL and click on “Sign in” option like below screenshot. Make sure to sign in by giving your outlook or Hotmail credentials.
Once Sign in successful, click on “JOIN NOW” button to join with “Office 365 developer program”.
By clicking on “JOIN NOW” option, A “Welcome to the Office 365 Developer Program” page will come, provide your personal and company details like:
- First Name
- Last Name
And at last, you have to choose the “terms and conditions” of the Office 365 Developer Program.
Optionally, You can select the I would like to hear from the Office 365 Developer Program check box if you want to hear from Microsoft about new capabilities and other updates. Then click on to “NEXT” option like below screenshot.
After clicking on “NEXT” option, A “Office 365 Developer Program Preferences” page will come. Here, you have to tell your preferences, so Microsoft can personalize your experience:
- The industry that you work in:
- The type of applications or solutions you’re interested in developing:
- Products, technologies, and programming languages that you’re interested in: etc.
After finishing all the fields, Click on to “Join” option like below.
After clicking the “JOIN” option, Here you can see your preference by receiving a Welcome message that “Welcome to the Office 365 Developer Program“. Then click on to “Close” option.
In the below screenshot, You can see the page of “Office 365 Developer” where you can set up the Office 365 subscription to use for development by using the “SET UP SUBSCRIPTION” option.
Also in that “Office 365 Developer” page, there is the presence of many latest things like:
- Upcoming events
- Latest blogs
- Latest videos
- Latest code samples
Set up an Office 365 Developer Subscription
After successfully joining with “Office 365 Developer Program”, you’ll see the option to set up a subscription.
The subscription is an Office 365 Developer Subscription with 25 user licenses. It is free for one year which can be used for Office 365 development purposes. To get the subscription of Office 365 Developer Program, Click on “SET UP SUBSCRIPTION” link, which is present on your Profile page like below screenshot.
After clicking on “SET UP SUBSCRIPTION”, A “Set up your developer subscription” page will come where you have to create a “Username” and “Domain“.
Also, you have to choose your “Country/Region” from the drop-down. Then create a “Password” and confirm that “Password”. Click on to “Continue” option to follow the further process.
After “Continue” the page, A “Add phone number for security” page will appear which is used to verify the identity that you made to your account. So they will use your phone number to contact you.
By using the phone number, They will text you a code that you can use to verify your phone number.
Fill the “Country code” from the drop-down and as well as give your “Phone number“. So that they can contact you. Click on to “Send Code” option.
After a while, They will send you an OTP. After putting that OTP number, You can set up the developer subscription by choosing the “Set up” option like below screenshot.
After “Set up” the page, You can see the setup operation is “In Progress” condition like below screenshot which should take only about a minute.
Configure Office 365 developer subscription
To configure the Office 365 Developer Subscription, You can follow the below steps:
On your profile page, choose the office.com link and then sign in with your user ID (for example, firstname.lastname@example.org) and the password you specified for your developer subscription like the below screenshot.
After “Sign in” the “Office 365 Developer Program” page, A “Product page” will display. Go to that “Assign Products” option which is present at the right top of the Profile page.
After clicking on to the “Assign Products”, Your “Microsoft 365 admin center Homepage” will display. Here you can see many options as like:
- Active users (where you can easily add, Delete, Edit a User and also Reset a Password)
- Billing (where you can see your Total balance and as well as In trial)
- Office software (where you can easily install, Share, Download the Software and also you can do Troubleshoot installation)
To get the “Office 365 SharePoint Online Admin Center“, Go to the “App Launcher” option which is present at the top of the Home page. Then go to the “Admin centers” from the Drop-down. Now click on to “SharePoint” option for opening the SharePoint page.
Here in the below screenshot, You can see the “SharePoint admin center”.
You can see all the “SharePoint Site Collection URL”. If you want to create a new SharePoint Site Collection, Then go to the “New” option which is present at the Ribbon. Then a new SharePoint Site Collection will create.
Create Users and Assign Office 365 Enterprise E3 Licenses
For this, we need to set up a few things in the Office 365 Admin center.
Go to the Home page of “Microsoft 365 admin center“. Then click on to “Go to setup” option which is present on your Profile Page. Follow the further process.
Personalize Sign-in and Email
After clicking on “Go to Setup” option, A “Personalize your Sign-in and email” page will display where they will ask you to connect whether connect a domain you already own or continue using your Domain name for email and signing in.
Here in the below screenshot, I have chosen “Continue using domain name.onmicrosoft.com” for email and signing in. Then clicked on to “Next” option.
Create or Add new users in Office 365
We can create or add up to 25 users in Office 365 developer subscription. After Personalize sign-in to the Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer Setup, A “Add new users” page will appear where you have to add some new User with their Domain name.
Here you can add more users anytime in the Office 365 Admin center. Then click on to “Next” option like below screenshot.
Assign Licenses to Office 365 Users
After adding users to our Office 365 tenant, we can assign licenses to those users so that they can access Office 365. Here in the below screenshot, “Assign licenses to unlicensed users” will display which represents that when you assign the license.
Click on “Next” option.
Now we have to share the “Sign-in the credentials” by using the “Email” option. Also, you can Download and as well as Print like below screenshot.
Enter an alternative email address for each user and they will send them an email containing their sign-in information.
Select the “Username” from all the credentials whatever you want and then click on to “Send email” option. Click on to “Next” option for further process.
After a while, an Email will get the selected credentials which you selected before.
The Email notification of selected credentials will display like the below screenshot. The details of that new user will show you like “Username” and “Temporary password” which is created by your organization’s administrator like below.
If the new user will go to the “Get started” option, Then that user can build its Office 365 developer program by using that “Username” and “Temporary password”.
Install Office Applications on your local machine
Users also can install Office applications on their local desktop or laptops. To do so, After the “Share Sign-in credentials“, It will ask you to “Install your Office apps” where you can install all Microsoft Office Professional plus like:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Skype for Business
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Power Note etc.
You can also install “Skype for Business” which is used to get instant messaging, audio and video calls, online meetings, and presentations etc.
Then click on to “Next” option. Now the end of Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer Setup page will come where you can give your experience rate.
Here all the Steps are completed i.e.
- Personalize sign-in Page
- Add users to Office 365
- Get apps for Standalone installation of Office
Now you can go to the Admin center by clicking on the “Go to the Admin center” option like below screenshot.
Check all Users and Product Licenses in Office 365
You can check all Office 365 users and assigned licenses to the users from Office 365 admin home page. Go to the Home page of your profile. Then click on to “Active users” option. Select a single User from all of the Users those are present in the Active users.
Then a “User Details” page will appear of that selected user like below. Go to the “Edit” option of “Product license” and get all the licenses from there.

Now go to the “App launcher” option which is present at the top of your profile Homepage. There you can see all the license Microsoft Apps serially like below screenshot.
