Power bi bookmarks
Power BI Bookmarks holds the current view of a Visuals, Report page, Slicer filters. It helps to take back to the selected report when you will select a bookmark.
By using Power BI Bookmarks, any Power BI User can create their own private bookmarks. There are two types of Bookmarks available such as:
- Any Bookmark can be created by any Power BI User.
- Power BI Bookmark can be created by Report designers.
Create a Power BI Bookmark
Now, we will see how to create a Power BI Bookmark using Power BI desktop by following the below steps:
Step-1:
In this example, we are going to create a report with bookmarks that will show the product sales for five individual gadgets.
So for that, I have taken a Product Sales data table which contains some of the columns as shown in the below screenshot.
Also, I have two visual Power BI Reports as below.
- Product Sales by Gadgets (Ribbon chart)
- Product Sales by City (Area chart)
Step-2:
Before creating the Power BI Bookmark, you need to add a Slicer filter under the Visualizations section. Here, Title represents my Gadget column. So I renamed it to Gadgets in the Field section.
Step-3:
Now we will add a Bookmarks for every gadget. Go to View tab -> Click Bookmarks under the Show panes section. A Bookmarks pane will appear next to the Visualizations pane.
Similarly, go to View tab -> Click Selection under the Show panes section. You don’t need to see the Slicer in the actual report, so remove the Slicer in appearance (not selection) by adding the Selection Pane and hiding the Slicer.
Step-4:
Select one gadget from the slicer filter and then Hide the slicer from the Selection pane as shown below.
Step-5:
Now you can see the Slicer filter will be hidden in the Selection pane. Add a Bookmark using the Add button and rename it to a particular gadget name.
Follow the same step to add Bookmarks in the Report page. First, make the selection, hide the slicer and then create the Bookmark.
When you will add all five gadget bookmarks, you can see each visual report by clicking on it.
Suppose, I want to see the Product Sales of Mobile, So I clicked on Mobile Bookmark, then the sales report (only for Mobile) will direct appear in the Report page as shown below.
Configure Power BI Bookmark in Power BI Report
Create a page for your report to add the icons of each gadget and then link the gadget images to each bookmarks those we just added.
Click Image button under the Insert tab as shown below.
Open the gadget icon box that appears and select the images that you want to use. I have already downloaded all the gadget icons previously.
To link the icons to their specific bookmarks, select one icon of the gadget. Go to the Format Image Pane -> Enable the Action button -> Select Type as Bookmark -> Select that specific gadget name (Mobile) from the Bookmark field as below.
Repeat the same process for rest of all four gadgets (Laptop, Tablet, Desktop, Radio).
What User will see by using Power BI Bookmark
By using the CTRL+click option, you can navigate to the particular bookmark of your choice. Suppose I selected a Mobile icon by using the CTRL+click option as below.
Then it was directly navigating to the first report page (Product Sales by Gadgets) which shows only the product sales for Mobile in each city.
Similarly, when you will go to the second report page (Product Sales by City), then it will show the total Mobile sales in each city as shown below.
In the same way, click CTRL+click option to follow the Radio link.
When you will click, it will directly navigate to the first report page (Product Sales by Gadgets) which shows only the product sales for Radio in each city.
Similarly, when you will go to the second report page (Product Sales by City), then it will show the total Radio sales in each city as shown below.
