How to Stop Microsoft Teams from Opening on Startup [3 Easy Methods]

If you’ve ever turned on your PC and watched Microsoft Teams pop up before you’ve even had your morning coffee, you’re not alone. Teams is set to auto-launch by default, and while that makes sense for some people, it’s genuinely annoying if you don’t need it running the moment Windows boots up.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through exactly how to stop Microsoft Teams from opening on startup — using four different methods. You can pick the one that works best for your situation.

Why Does Teams Keep Opening on Startup?

When you install Microsoft Teams, it automatically adds itself to your Windows startup programs. The idea is to keep you “always available” for messages and calls. But if you’re not using Teams all day, every day, this just means slower boot times and extra RAM being used up for no reason.

Here’s what auto-launching Teams actually costs you:

  • Slower startup — Teams is a heavy app. It adds noticeable delay to how fast your PC becomes usable after booting.
  • Wasted memory — Even when you’re not actively using it, Teams sits in the background consuming RAM and CPU.
  • Clutter — An app you didn’t ask to open is just noise on your taskbar.

The good news? Fixing this takes less than two minutes.

Now I will show you another way to prevent Microsoft Teams from opening on our system.

Method 1: Turn It Off Inside Teams Settings (Easiest)

This is the first place I always check. Teams has a built-in toggle to stop it from auto-starting, and it’s straightforward to find.

Steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Click on your profile picture (top-right corner) or the three-dot menu (...).
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown.
  4. Go to the General tab.
  5. Look for the option “Auto-start application” or “Auto-start Teams” — uncheck it.
  6. While you’re there, also uncheck “Open application in background” if you see it.

That second checkbox is important. Even if you turn off the main auto-start option, Teams can still quietly run in the background if “Open in background” is enabled. Turning both off ensures Teams only opens when you decide to open it.

Close Teams and restart your PC to confirm it no longer launches automatically.

Quick note: If your organization uses a managed Teams setup through IT, this setting might be greyed out. In that case, jump to Method 4 below.

Method 2: Disable Teams from Task Manager (Most Reliable)

Task Manager gives you a full view of everything that runs at startup, not just Teams. This method works even if the in-app toggle doesn’t seem to stick.

Steps:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly.
(Or right-click the Start button and select “Task Manager.”)
  2. Click on the Startup apps tab (in Windows 11) or the Startup tab (in Windows 10).
  3. Find Microsoft Teams in the list.
  4. Right-click on it and select Disable.
Disable Teams from Task Manager

Done. Teams will no longer launch at startup after your next restart.

One thing I like about this method — it’s persistent. Even if Teams updates itself and tries to re-enable auto-start, this setting in Task Manager often holds. It’s my go-to method when the in-app setting alone isn’t working.

You can also see the Startup impact column here. If Teams is marked as “High,” that indicates exactly how much it’s slowing down your boot time. Disabling it makes a real difference.

Method 3: What to Do When Teams Keep Coming Back

This is a common frustration: you disable Teams from startup, you restart, and somehow it’s back again. Here are the most common reasons this happens and how to fix each one.

Issue 1: Teams Re-Enables Itself After an Update

Teams is known to reset its own startup settings after updates. After any major Teams update, go back to Settings → General inside the app and confirm the auto-start toggle is still off.

Issue 2: Windows 11 Has a Separate “Chat” Feature

Windows 11 came with a built-in Chat icon on the taskbar that uses a lighter version of Teams (the personal version). Even if you’ve disabled the full Teams app, this Chat integration can still trigger Teams-related processes at startup.

To fix this:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the taskbar.
  2. Select Taskbar Settings.
  3. Toggle Chat to Off.

This stops Windows from loading the personal Teams component at boot.

Issue 3: Teams Machine-Wide Installer Is Reinstalling It

On some systems (especially work-managed PCs), a program called Microsoft Teams Machine-Wide Installer keeps putting Teams back even after you uninstall or disable it. To check:

  1. Open Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program.
  2. Look for Microsoft Teams Machine-Wide Installer.
  3. Uninstall it.

Be careful with this step if you’re on a work laptop — your IT team may have installed it intentionally, and removing it could affect your ability to use Teams for work.

Issue 4: Old Settings Cached by Teams

Sometimes Teams stores old settings in its cache and reverts to them. If you’ve tried everything and Teams still auto-starts, try clearing the Teams cache:

  1. Press Windows + R and type: %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams
  2. Hit Enter.
  3. Delete the contents of this folder (not the folder itself — just what’s inside it).

Teams will rebuild its cache the next time you open it, and your fresh settings should stick.

Bonus: How to Stop Teams from Opening on Mac

If you’re on a Mac, the process is slightly different.

Option 1 – Through Teams:

  1. Open Teams.
  2. Click Microsoft Teams in the menu bar → Settings.
  3. Go to General → Uncheck “Open at login”.

Option 2 – Through System Settings:

  1. Go to Apple Menu → System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
  2. Click General → Login Items.
  3. Find Microsoft Teams in the list and click the minus (–) button to remove it.

Which Method Should You Use?

Here’s a quick way to decide:

  • Just want a quick fix? → Use Method 1 (Teams Settings).
  • Want something more reliable? → Use Method 2 (Task Manager).
  • Teams keeps coming back after updates? → Combine Method 1 + Method 2, and check for the Machine-Wide Installer.
  • On a work-managed PC and settings are greyed out? → Contact your IT admin. They likely have a Group Policy that controls this setting.
