If you spend a good chunk of your day on Microsoft Teams — calls, chats, meetings — you already know how harsh that bright white interface can feel after a few hours. Your eyes get tired, and by evening, it almost feels like staring into a flashlight.
Dark mode fixes that. It swaps the white background for deep grays and blacks, which is much easier on the eyes, especially in low-light conditions. And honestly, it looks cleaner too.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to make Microsoft Teams Dark Mode, every way — on desktop (Windows and Mac), on mobile (Android and iOS), and even on the web version. I’ll also cover what to do if dark mode isn’t sticking or keeps reverting.
Let’s get into it.
Why Use Dark Mode in Teams?
Before we jump to the steps, here’s why it’s worth switching:
- Reduces eye strain — Especially useful during long video calls or late-night work sessions
- Saves battery on OLED/AMOLED screens — Dark pixels use less power on these displays
- Looks more modern — The dark theme gives Teams a clean, professional look
- Better in dim environments — If you work in a darker room, the light theme can feel blinding
Alright, now let’s actually turn it on.
Make Microsoft Teams Dark Mode
Now I will tell you another way to change Microsoft Teams to dark mode.
Method 1: Enable Dark Mode on Microsoft Teams Desktop (Windows & Mac)
This is the most common scenario — you’re using the Teams desktop app on your Windows PC or Mac. Here’s exactly what to do:
Step 1: Open Microsoft Teams on your computer and make sure you’re signed in.
Step 2: Look at the top-right corner of the Teams window. You’ll see your profile picture (or initials if you haven’t set a photo).
Step 3: Click the three-dot menu (…) that sits right next to or near your profile picture. This opens a small dropdown menu.
Step 4: Click on Settings from the dropdown.
Step 5: In the Settings panel that opens, look at the left-side menu and click on Appearance.
Step 6: Under the Theme section, you’ll see three options:
- Light — The default white look
- Dark — The dark gray/black theme
- System Default — Teams automatically matches whatever your operating system (Windows or Mac) is set to
Step 7: Click on Dark.

That’s it. Teams will apply the dark theme almost instantly — you don’t usually need to restart the app. The whole interface shifts to a dark gray background with lighter text.
Quick Tip: If you’re not sure which option to pick and you switch between light and dark mode on your computer throughout the day, go with System Default. Teams will automatically switch themes along with your OS. Super convenient.
Method 2: Enable Dark Mode on Microsoft Teams Mobile (Android & iOS)
If you use Teams on your phone, which most of us do for quick replies and joining calls on the go, here’s how to turn on dark mode on the mobile app.
The steps are almost the same on both Android and iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Microsoft Teams app on your phone.
Step 2: Tap your profile picture in the top-left corner of the screen.
Step 3: Tap Settings from the menu that slides in.
Step 4: Tap on Appearance (it’s usually the first option under General).
Step 5: Under Theme, tap Dark.
Step 6: A message will pop up saying you need to restart the app for the change to apply. Close Teams completely and reopen it.

Once it restarts, your mobile Teams app will be in dark mode.
Note for iOS users: If you have your iPhone set to Dark Mode system-wide (via Settings > Display & Brightness), you can select System Default in Teams, and it’ll automatically follow your phone’s theme. Same goes for Android.
Method 3: Enable Dark Mode on Microsoft Teams Web (Browser)
If you use Teams in your browser, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc., the steps are slightly different because the web version has its own settings separate from the desktop app.
Step 1: Go to teams.microsoft.com and sign in.
Step 2: Click on the three-dot menu (…) near the top-right corner of the Teams web interface.
Step 3: Click Settings.
Step 4: Go to Appearance.
Step 5: Select Dark under the Theme section.

The browser version should switch to dark mode right away.
One thing to know: The web client and the desktop app are completely separate. If you set dark mode in the desktop app, it won’t automatically apply to the browser version. You’ll need to set it in both places if you use both.
Method 4: Use “System Default” to Sync Teams With Your OS Theme
This is honestly my favorite method. Instead of manually switching Teams to dark mode, you can tell Teams to just follow whatever your operating system is set to.
So if your Windows or Mac is in dark mode, Teams goes dark. If you switch your OS to light mode, Teams follows. It’s automatic and seamless.
On Windows:
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors
- Under Choose your mode, select Dark
- In Teams, set the theme to System Default

On Mac:
- Go to System Preferences > General
- Under Appearance, select Dark
- In Teams, set the theme to System Default
From now on, Teams will always match your system theme without you having to touch the Teams settings.
What If Dark Mode Keeps Reverting Back to Light?
This is a genuinely annoying problem that quite a few people run into when you set dark mode. Teams confirms the change, but the next time you open the app, it’s back to light mode. Here’s what you can try to fix it:
Fix 1: Update Microsoft Teams
Make sure you’re on the latest version of Teams. Go to the three-dot menu → Check for updates. Old versions sometimes have bugs with theme persistence.
Fix 2: Clear the Teams Cache
A corrupted cache is one of the most common reasons settings don’t stick. Here’s how to clear it on Windows:
- Completely close Microsoft Teams
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog
- Type
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teamsand hit Enter - Delete the contents of the entire folder (don’t delete the folder itself — just what’s inside it)
- Reopen Teams and set dark mode again
On Mac, the cache is located at: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
Fix 3: Sign Out and Back In
Sometimes signing out of Teams completely and signing back in resets the settings properly. Do this after clearing the cache for best results.
Fix 4: Try “Follow Operating System” Instead
If setting “Dark” directly keeps reverting, try selecting System Default instead, and make sure your OS is in dark mode. This can sometimes be more stable.
Fix 5: Check If You’re on the Right Account
If you have multiple Teams accounts or profiles, the theme setting applies per account. Make sure you’re setting the theme for the account you actually use most.
Dark Mode for Meetings: Is It Different?
Good question — yes and no. When you’re in a meeting, Teams doesn’t have a separate dark mode toggle. The theme you set in Appearance applies everywhere, including the meeting interface.
However, there is a background effect option during meetings where you can blur your background or use a virtual background — that’s a separate setting and has nothing to do with dark mode. Don’t get the two mixed up.
If you set dark mode before joining a call, the meeting controls, chat panel, and participant list will all appear in dark mode as well.
Bonus: High Contrast Mode for Accessibility
If you or someone on your team has vision difficulties, dark mode might not go far enough. Microsoft Teams also supports High Contrast themes, which create sharper visual distinctions between text and background.
To enable it:
- Go to Settings > Appearance in Teams
- Look for High Contrast options (you may need to also enable High Contrast Mode in your OS settings — Windows has this under Ease of Access > High Contrast)
This isn’t just for people with disabilities — some people simply find high contrast easier to read, especially in dark environments.
Quick Recap: Which Method Should You Use?
Here’s a simple way to decide:
- Just want dark mode right now? → Go to Settings > Appearance > Dark (Method 1 or 2)
- Want Teams to automatically switch with your computer? → Use System Default (Method 4)
- Using Teams in a browser? → You need to set it separately in the web version (Method 3)
- Dark mode keeps reverting? → Clear your cache and update the app
