In this example, I am going to use the financials data as mentioned below: You can also download the financials Sample data from here.

  • Open Power bi desktop. Load the financial data by using the get data option.
  • From the visualization pane, Select the Slicer visual and the table visual so that if you filter any values in the Slicer visual the changes will be reflected in the Table visual.
  • In the Fields section, drag and drop the Sales column and Country column from the field pane in both visuals as shown below:

  • When we add multiple columns to the power bi slicer, by default it will automatically display the arrow next to the items, click on the arrow to expand, to show the items in the next level.
  • Here the first level is the Country field and the next level is the Sales field.

  • Now filter any value from the slicer visual, and the values will be filtered and displayed in the table visual automatically.
  • We can also have an option to clear selections in the slicer visual if we select the clear selections option. The Slicer filter will be removed from the slicer visual.

If we want to filter multiple related fields in a single slicer, we can do it by using a hierarchy slicer.

  • Here I have taken the Product hierarchy which contains the product name column, country column, and also the segment column in the slicer visual.
  • Load the data by using the get data option. From the visualization pane, Select the Slicer visual and the table visual so that if you filter any values in the Slicer visual the changes will be reflected in the Table visual. Here the slicer is in the type of dropdown slicer style.
  • In the Fields section, drag and drop the Product hierarchy and Sales column from the field pane in both visuals as shown below:

  • Now you can select the multiple columns, i.e. I have selected Product name( Paseo) and then select Country column.
  • When you expand the Country column you can see the next level options for Segments and then the Sales value. This is how the hierarchy slicer works.
  • Now select any value from the slicer visual, and the values will be filtered and displayed in the table visual automatically.

Format the slicer style

  • There are two slicer styles presented, one is the list slicer style and the other now is the dropdown slicer style.
  • We can swap and choose any one of the slicer styles as shown below:

Format the title

  • To Change the title of any slicer, click on the formatting section in the visualization pane.
  • And then expand the slicer header, now under Title text, we can change or update the default title.
  • Once the title has been changed it will automatically reflect the selected slicer.
  • We can also change the font size, font style, and font color of the slicer header.

Format the expand and collapse icon in the slicer

  • Power bi hierarchy slicer has some other formatting options, We can change the expand/ collapse icon or the caret sign or plus/minus sign from the default arrow sign.
  • To change the expand/collapse icon, click on the Formatting section in the visualization pane.
  • Expand the Hierarchy, then scroll down to Expand and collapse icon, from the dropdown select the style of the icon.

In this example, I am going to use the financial data, and in the date hierarchy slicer, I have selected the Month slicer, so that the data will be changed based on the selected month and displayed in the Table visual or Matrix visual.

  • Import the data into Power BI Desktop, and make sure the table that you are loading to the desktop has a date column in it.
  • From the visualization pane, Select the Slicer visual and add the date field to it, from the date hierarchy, you can select date or month, or quarter, from the date table into the slicer,

Here I have used two tables called financials and sales tables, make sure one column is common in both the tables so that we can make the relationship between the two tables.

  • Open Power bi desktop. Load the financial data by using the get data option.
  • Make sure the relationship between the tables in Power Bi,

  • From the visualization pane, Select the Slicer visual and choose the Between option and also select the chart visual so that if you filter any values in the Slicer visual the changes will be reflected in the selected chart visual.
  • Drag and drop the date hierarchy field into the slicer visual, and choose the between option. so that we can choose the from to option in the date slicer.
  • The sales by country chart display data from the financial table and the Sales by Product and Country chart displays data from Sales Table.
