What is Line Chart in Power BI?
- A line chart is a sequence of data points defined by dots and joined by straight lines. A line chart may include one or multiple lines. It is one of the visuals to display the data in the Power BI report in a visually immersive and interactive manner.
- It is used to define continuous data sets and the line charts maintain an X and a Y-axis in Power BI.

How to create a Line Chart in Power BI
Let us see how we can create a line chart in Power BI, To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Initially, Open the Power BI Desktop, under the Home section, Expand the Get data option presented in the toolbar to connect the Data Source, and then click on the Excel workbook under the Common data sources option.
- In this example, I have selected the Excel Workbook as my data source, we can also connect the data source from SQL Server, SharePoint List, etc.,

- Now browse the location of the excel workbook available in the local, select the Excel workbook, and click on the open button as shown below:

- In the Navigator, select the excel sheet that you want to load and preview the data, and once you are satisfied that you are loading the right file, click on the Load option.

- It will take a few minutes to load the data into the Power BI desktop, Once the data is loaded you can confirm the data under the field section and the fields pane contains the column data presented in the excel workbook.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the line chart is added to the report canvas.

- In this example, we use a line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the country, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Country field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the line chart displays the value based on the Sales by country in the report canvas.

Multiple lines on a Line chart in Power BI
Let us see how to display multiple lines plotted on a Line Chart visual in Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to display the line chart with multiple lines plotted on it.
To achieve this, follow the below steps:
- Initially, make sure that you have loaded the data source to the Power BI desktop.
- Once the data is loaded you can confirm the data under the Fields section and the fields pane contains the column data presented in the source data.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the line chart is added to the report canvas.
- In this example, we use a line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the country and Month, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Month field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field.

- Now in the Legend section, simply drag and drop the Country data field under the Visualizations pane, to get the multiple Line chart based on sales occurred by the country and Month.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the line chart displays Multiple lines on a Line chart in Power BI based on sales that occurred by the country and Month in the report canvas.

Let us see how to create and display the Line and Stacked Column chart in Power BI,
To achieve this, follow the below steps:
- Initially, make sure that you have loaded the data source to the Power BI desktop.
- Make sure the data has been loaded under the Fields section and the fields pane contains the column data presented in the source data.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line and Stacked Column Chart option, you can see that the Line and Stacked Column chart is added to the report canvas as shown below:

- In this example, we use Line and Stacked Column chart to see the sales and COGS that occurred based on Month, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Month field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field and in the Lines, the y-axis drag and drop the COGS field.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that Line and Stacked Column chart displays the Sales and COGS value based on sales Month in the report canvas.

Line chart in Table Power BI
- No, it is not possible to view the Line chart in the table visual in Power BI.
- We cannot see the line chart in the Table Power BI, it is not available.
Power BI line chart secondary axis
Let us see how we can add a secondary axis to the Power BI line chart,
- Select the line chart from the visualization pane on the Power bi desktop and make sure you have connected to the source data.
- Here we can add the secondary value to the Power BI line chart, under the visualization pane.
- In this example, we use a Line chart to see the sales and COGS that occurred based on the year, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Date field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field and in the Secondary y-axis drag and drop the COGS field.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the Line chart displays the Sales and COGS value based on the sales year with the Secondary axis in the report canvas.

Trend line chart in Power BI
Let us see how to create and add a trend line chart in the Power BI,
- Select the line chart from the visualization pane on the Power bi desktop and make sure you have connected to the source data.
- The trend line feature only works with continuous data, and the following visuals charts can use a trend line :
- Area chart
- Line chart
- Clustered column chart
- Scatter chart
- Line and clustered column chart
- The trend line feature only works with continuous data, so Under Format Visual, so make sure the Selected Chart type displays the type Continuous as shown below:

- In this example, we use a Trend Line chart to see the sales price and Manufacturing Price that occurred based on the year, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Date field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field and Manufacturing Price field.
- Now we have to enable the Trend line toggle control in the analytics pane, under the visualizations.
- We also have an option to change the color, the trend line style, and transparency. We can also reset the default values, by selecting the rest to the default option.

- In the below screenshot, you can see that the Line chart displays the Sales price and Manufacturing price based on the year with the trend line in the report canvas.

Power BI line chart Tooltip order
Let us see how we can add and customize the tooltip on a Power BI line chart,
- Select the line chart from the visualization pane and make sure the source data has been loaded on the Power bi desktop.
- Now, we can add the data field to the tooltip presented under the Visualization pane.
- If the tooltip is not enabled, when you hover over the line chart you cannot see the tooltip order.
- Make sure you have enabled the Tooltips. If not enable the tooltip in the General tab under the Format visual in the visualizations pane as mentioned below:

- In this example, I have added the Profit and discounts data field to display in the tooltip, And when you hover over the line chart data point, you can see that the tooltip order displays the Profit and discount values as shown below:

- We also have an option to format the visuals and to change the Font, label color, and value color of the Tooltip order under the text option.
- Under the Background option, we can change the background color of the tooltip.
- We can also reset the default values, by selecting the rest to the default option.

- No, it is not possible to create the Line chart visualization bases on the row by row in Power BI.
- We cannot use line chart visual with matrix visual chart in Power BI.
Power BI line chart sort x-axis

Yes, it is possible to sort the line chart x-axis in Power BI, follow the below steps:
- Initially, open the Power Bi line chart for which you want to sort the x-axis. Select the Line chart and click on the ellipsis in the upper right.
- Now select the Sort axis and choose the X-axis data field. And also you can see we can sort the X-axis either in the Sort ascending manner or Sort descending manner.

Yes, it is possible to display the line chart with multiple years in Power BI, To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Initially, make sure that you have loaded the data source to the Power BI desktop. Once the data is loaded you can confirm the data under the Fields section and the fields pane contains the column data presented in the source data.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the line chart is added to the report canvas.
- In this example, we use a line chart to see the sales price that occurred based on the Month and year, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Month field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales price field.
- Now in the Legend section, simply drag and drop the Year field under the Visualizations pane as shown below:

Power BI line chart conditional formatting
Let us see how we can apply conditional formatting on the Power BI line chart,
There is no direct way to apply conditional formatting on the Power BI. But, there is an alternative that we can achieve this. Follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Make sure the source data has been loaded to the Power BI desktop.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, click on the stacked column chart option, you can see that the stacked column chart is added to the report canvas and resize it.
- In this example, we use a stacked column chart to see the sales that occurred based on the Product, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Product field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field.

- Select Format Visual under the Visualisation pane, Expand the Columns under the Visual tab (highlighted in Red), and click on the Fx icon as shown below:
- We cannot apply conditional formatting in the line chart, because we cannot see the fx icon option in the line chart format visuals.

- Now, Select the Format style as Gradient and choose the column field value, Either we can add a custom value in the Enter a value field or We can leave the values by default, lowest value, Middle value, and Highest Value.
- Click on the Ok button to apply the conditional formatting for the column chart.

- In the below screenshot, we can see that the Column chart has been formatted based on the Values.

- Now under the Visualizations pane, change the stacked column chart visual to the Line Chart visual. Now we can see the expected output as shown below:

This is an alternative way that we can apply conditional formatting on the Power BI line chart.

Power BI line chart Date Hierarchy
Let us learn how to use the Date Hierarchy in the line chart visual in Power BI,
- Dates are a unique type of hierarchy. We will often add the date hierarchy to the visuals used in the reports. A familiar date hierarchy is one that contains the year, quarter, month, and day. And the Date Hierarchy in Power BI is built-in functionality.
- In this example, we use a line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the year, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Date hierarchy field which is formatted as the date field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field.

- We want to change the default date hierarchy to date, and it is possible to remove the fields from the default date hierarchy, by selecting the remove X icon.

Power BI line chart drill-down
Let us see how we can work with drill down in the line chart visual drill down in Power BI,
- When a line chart visual has a hierarchy, we can drill down to display the next level details.
- Drill requires a hierarchy, when there is no hierarchy in the line chart visual then we cannot see the drill icons.
- There are two ways that we can access the drill features, Either we can directly hover over the line chart visual or we can right-click the line chart visual and select drill-up or drill down.
- Select the Up arrow to drill up to the previous level of the line chart hierarchy and the double down arrow to the next level of the line chart hierarchy.
- When we hover over the line chart visual, if it has a hierarchy then we can able to see the drill icons as mentioned below:

- For example, if we have a hierarchy of Year, Quarter, Month, and day. Initially, when we click on the drill down, it displays only the first level hierarchy ( Year and Quarter).

- When we click on the drill down for the second time, it displays only the second level hierarchy ( Year, Quarter, and Month).

- When we click on the drill down for the third time, it displays only the third level hierarchy ( Year, Quarter, Month, and day).

Let us see how can we display the data in the Monthly X-Axis with Weekly Data on Line Chart in Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to display the weekly data with multiple years on the line chart visual in Power BI. To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Load the source data into the Power BI desktop, and confirm that the data source has been loaded under the fields.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the line chart is added to the report canvas.
- In this example, we use a line chart to display the data in the Monthly X-Axis with Weekly Data on the sales that occurred based on the Weekly Data, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Date Hierarchy Month and the Week Number field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the Sales field.

- And also make sure you have turned off Concatenate labels in Formatting under Format Visual, X-axis-> Concatenate labels as shown below:

- To display the weekly data with multiple years on the line chart visual, In the Legend section, simply drag and drop the year’s field under the Visualizations pane, to get the weekly data with multiple years on the line chart visual.

Yes, displaying the data based on the day in Line Chart in Power BI is possible. To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Load the source data into the Power BI desktop, and confirm that the data source has been loaded under the fields.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the line chart is added to the report canvas.

Let us see how we can the filters and display the data in the line chart Power BI and also will see what are the filters type available in the Line chart Power BI,
- In the Power BI desktop, we can able to see the filters pane. When we expand the filters pane we can able to see the filters available.
- In Power Bi reports, by default, there are three types of filters available, they are,
- Filters on this visual
- Filters on this page
- Filters on all pages
- Filters on this visual -> Filters the data on the selected visual.
- Filters on this page -> Filters data on the particular report page.
- Filters on all pages -> Filters data on all the reports.

- Open the report and select the visual for which you want to apply the filter.
- Then Expand the Filters pane and apply the filter based on the column field under the Filters in this visual section. The Visualization will automatically change based on the applied filter.
- In this example, I am going to filter the data based on the selected visual, you can see that I am going to filter the data based on the month as shown below:

- Open the report page for which you want to apply the filter.
- Then Expand the Filters pane and apply the filter based on the column field under the Filters on this page section. The Report page will automatically change based on the applied filter.
- In this example, I am going to filter the data based on the filters on this page, you can see that I am going to filter the data based on the month as shown below:
- The below screenshot represents the data based on the filter applied, it displays data for the selected year only.

Filters on all pages -> Filters and display the data on all the reports pages.

Let us see how we can change the date format in the line chart Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to apply date formatting in the line chart x-axis, To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Open the Power BI desktop, and make sure the source data has been loaded to the Power BI desktop.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the line chart is added to the report canvas.
- To format the date, confirm that the data source has a date column in the table. Now select the Table and click on the New column under the Table tools option as shown below:

- Here, you can see that the column has been created under the Fields section, Now select the column under the column tools option and apply the below-mentioned formula and click on the Tick option to format the date.

- To rename the created column for the model, select the column that you want to rename and click on the rename option and rename it. Here I have renamed the column to the Date column.

Yes, we can change the color of the line in the line chart, and also we can choose the line color based on the value in the line chart Power BI. Follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the line chart for which you want to change the color of the line. Choose the Format visual option.
- Under the Visual tab, Scroll down and search for the Lines option, Expand the Lines option.
- Expand the colors under the Lines section as shown below:

- Now change the color of the line that is to be displayed in the line chart.
- Enable the Show all option, to change the color based on the value in the line chart.
- Once you change the Colors of the line, it automatically changes the line color presented in the line chart.

Power BI line chart Line style
Let us see how we can change the line style in the line Chart Power BI,
Yes, we can change the style of the line in the line chart, Follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the line chart for which you want to change the style of the line. Choose the Format visual option.
- Under the Visual tab, Scroll down and search for the Lines option, Expand the Lines option.
- Expand the Shape under the Lines section as shown below:

- Under the Line style, we can change the line style of the line chart. By default, the line style will be the solid line style. They are three types of the line style available, they are,
- Dashed
- Solid
- Dotted
- We can also reset the changed data label position by selecting the reset to the default option.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have changed the Line style from the Solid line style to the Dotted line style. Once you change the style of the line, it automatically changes the line style, presented in the line chart.

Power BI line chart data label position
Let us how we can configure the data label and set the data label position in the line chart Power BI.
To set the data label position follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the Power BI line chart for which you want to enable the data label and set the position for it. Now choose the Format visual option.
- Under the Visual tab, Scroll down and search for the Data label option, Enable the data label option as shown below:
- Once the data label is enabled, we can see the data displayed in the line chart.

- Expand the data label option and Under the options, we can change the data label position of the line chart. By default, the data label position will be Auto. They are three types of the data label position available, they are,
- Auto
- Above
- Under
- We can also reset the changed data label position by selecting the reset to the default option.

Let us see how we can format a line chart in Power BI, and also we will see a few examples of formatting the line chart.
- Formatting the Power BI Line Chart contains altering the Line Colors, Title text, Title position, Data labels, Tooltip, etc.
- In the Power BI line chart format, the visual pane includes two tabs, one is a visual tab and another is a general tab.
Format Line Chart Visual Settings
- Initially select the line chart that you want to format, under the Visualization pane click on the format visual icon. Select the visual tab.
- Under the Visual settings, we can see Axis details, Legends, Lines, Markers, Data labels, series labels, etc., as highlighted below:

Format X-Axis of a Line Chart in Power BI
- Based on selected visual and column fields we can see the type, values, title, range, etc., in the X-axis line chart.
- By default, the X-Axis title will be enabled, if we want to disable it, we can do it by toggling Title to Off.
- Under Type, either we can see the continuous or the type categorical. Under the Values, we can change the style of the font, font size, font color, height, etc.,
- In the Title section, we can manually enter the title that we want to display on the x- axis and we can change the font style, font size, font color, and height, etc., for the title.
- We can also reset to the default values, by clicking on the reset to the default option.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have changed the default color to the brown color under the values section.

This is how we can format the X-axis of a line chart in Power BI.
Format Y-Axis of a Power BI Line Chart
- Based on selected visual and column fields we can see the type, values, title, range, etc., in the Y-axis line chart.
- By default, the Y-Axis title will be enabled, if we want to disable it, we can do it by toggling Title to Off.
- Under Range, we can set the Minimum and Maximum values, we also have an option to enable the Logarithmic scale and invert the range. When we enable these options the line chart changes automatically based on the ranges.
- Under the Values we can change the style of the font, font size, font color, and height, etc., In extra, we can also switch the Y-axis position, for that we have to enable the switch position toggle control.
- In the Title section, we can manually enter the title that we want to display on the Y-axis and we can change the font style, font size, font color, and height, etc., for the title.
- We can also reset to the default values, by clicking on the reset to the default option.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have enabled you to switch the Y-axis position under the values section.

This is how we can format the Y-axis of a line chart in Power BI.
Format Legend of a Line Chart in Power BI
- Initially, we have to enable the legend toggle control to display legends in the line chart. Under the Legend section, there are three sections, they are options, text, and title.
- Under the Options, we can set the position to display the legends in the line chart, like Top right, Top left, Bottom right, Bottom Left, etc.,
- We can also choose the style for the legends to display like Marker, Line, Line, and Marker and Marker circle ( default).
- Under the Text, we can change the style of the font, font size, font color, etc.,
- In the Title section, we can manually enter the legend title that we want to display in the line chart.
- If we want to sort the line chart, based on the legend we can sort it out.
- We can also reset to the default values, by clicking on the reset to the default option.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I changed the default marked circle style to the line style in the options section.

Format Line Chart General Settings
- Initially select the line chart that you want to format, under the Visualization pane click on the format visual icon. Select the General tab.
- Under the General settings, we can see Properties, Title, Tooltips, Alt text, etc., as highlighted below:

Format Power BI Line Chart Properties
- Under the Properties section, we can change the size and Position of the line chart. Expand the size section to change the height and width of the line chart. Expand the position to change the horizontal and vertical position of the line chart as highlighted below:
- Select the Reset to default option to revert back the changes that you have made in the properties section.

This is how we can Format Power BI Line Chart Properties.
Format Power BI Line Chart Title
- To enable or disable the Title option from On to Off in the line chart we can use the toggle control switch to on/off.
- We can also add the title manually and display them in the line chart Power BI, Also we have an option to choose the headings (heading 2 to heading 6).
- We can the font style and font size. In addition, we can choose the Text color, BackGround color and also the Text alignment, and Text wrap as mentioned below:
- We can also reset to the default values, by clicking on the reset to the default option.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have changed the Horizontal alignment to the center, and also I have changed the background color and the text color.

Power BI line chart x-axis continuous vs categorical
Let us discuss what is the difference between continuous vs categorical,
X-axis continuous in Power BI | X-axis categorical Power BI |
Continuous type is where the values can change continuously and we cannot count the number of different values. | The categorical type is where we can make a small number of categories. And it is a non-numeric category or group. |
For example, In X-axis Continuous type, it shows the data in a natural growth order, like 1,2,3,… | For example, In the X-axis Categorical type, show the date which has values based on Y-Axis. |
Here it takes the continuous value like 1,2,3 etc., | Here it takes the group value like 10 to 20, 20 to 30, etc., |
The above table represents the difference between the x-axis continuous type vs categorical type.
Power BI line chart hover over
Let us see how we can hover over the line and display the data in the line chart Power BI.
- Hover over is not only supported for the line chart visual, but it also supports the other visuals that are available in the Power BI.
- Make sure your tooltip toggle control is enabled under the general settings in the format visual pane. Only then when we move over the line we can able to see the data.
- If you have turned off the tooltip order, and hover over the line in the line chart it will not show any data.
- We can add only one field to the legends section so that when we hover over the line it displays the mentioned field data.
- Currently, the Power BI desktop allows selecting tooltips data.
- In this example, we use a line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the product and country, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Product field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field.
- In the legend section, drag and drop the country field, so that when we hover over the line based on the country it will display the data in the tooltip.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the line chart tooltip displays the value based on the Sales by country in the report canvas.

Power BI line chart line thickness
Let us see how we can make the line thick in the line Chart Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to make the line thicker in the line chart Power BI. Follow the below steps to achieve this:
- Select the line chart for which you want to change the thickness of the line. Choose the Format visual option.
- Under the Visual tab, Scroll down and search for the Lines option, Expand the Lines option.
- Expand the Shape under the Lines section as shown below and enlarge the Stroke Width option. This will make the line thicker in the line chart.

This is how we can make the line thick in the line Chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart legend limit
Let us discuss the Power BI line chart legend limit,
- In the Power BI desktop, we can add only one column field in the legend section, it is not possible to add multiple columns field in the legend section.
- When we hover over the line in the line chart, we can see the tooltip order displays the data.
- The Tooltip is limited to display only 10 data, Manually we cannot add or edit the tooltip limit. We cannot increase or decrease the tooltip limit, and also there is no option to format or customize the tooltip limit.
- For example, we have 12 months in a year, but you can see the tooltip displays only 10 data as shown below: Just because the tooltip is limited to 10.

The above-discussed points explain the legend limit in the Power BI line chart.
Power BI line chart dashed and solid
Let us see how we can display the dashed and solid line style in the line chart Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to display the half dashed and half solid line style in the line chart Power BI. Based on the column field settings we can display the line style as dashed and Solid. To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the line chart that has one or more lines, so that we can change and display the line styles.
- Under the Visual tab, Scroll down and search for the Lines option, Expand the Lines option. By default, the lines in the line chart will appear in the Solid line style.
- In the Apply settings section, under series select the column field for which you want to change the line style to dotted.
- In this example, I have changed the Profit column field line style to the Dotted line style as shown below:
- Here Sales column field is the Solid line style, and the Profit column field is the Dotted line style.

This is how we can display the line chart with the dashed and solid line style in Power BI.
Power BI line chart analytics
Let us see how to use the analytics pane on the Power BI desktop,
- By using, the line chart analytics pane we can add the reference line to the visuals. The Analytics pane only occurs when you select a visual on the Power BI Desktop canvas.
- Under the visualizations, we can find the analytics icon on the Power BI desktop.
- The analytics feature will not be available in the selected visual cannot have a dynamic reference line.
- Using the Analytics pane, we can create the below-mentioned dynamic references line, and also it will not be available for all the visual types.
- Symmetry shading
- X-Axis constant line
- Y-Axis constant line
- Min line
- Max line
- Average line
- Percentile line
- Median line
Follow these steps to view the dynamic reference lines for a line chart visual:
- Select the line chart that you have created, In the right-hand side you can see the visualizations, you can find the analytics icon under the visualizations.

- In this example, I am going to show the Min line. We can add one or more reference lines in the line chart visual.
- Expand the Min line, and select +Add line under the application settings to option. Once the line is added, Under the series, select the series for which you want to add a reference line. Here I have selected the Sales column field.
- Under the Line Option, we can change the color of the line, Transparency, and also the line style that we want to display for the reference line in the Power BI line chart.

- If we want to enable a data label, by default the data label will be turned off. If we want to know the data then we have to enable it as shown below:
- We can also change the color, position, and style of the data value as highlighted below:

This is how to use the analytics pane on the Power BI desktop.
Power BI line chart no line
Let us see how we can hide and display the line chart with no line,
Yes, it is possible to show the data, without the line. Follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Make sure the data has been loaded under the Fields section and the fields pane contains the column data presented in the source data.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line and Stacked Column Chart option, you can see that the Line and Stacked Column chart is added to the report canvas.
- In this example, we use Line and Stacked Column chart to see the sales and COGS that occurred based on Month, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Month field. And in the y-axis drag and drop the COGS field, and in the Line y-axis drag and drop the Sales column field
- In the below screenshot, you can see that Line and Stacked Column chart displays the Sales and COGS value based on sales Month in the report canvas.

- Now, to hide a line, select the line chart and click on the format visual option.
- Under the Visual tab, Scroll down and search for the Lines option, Expand the Lines option.
- Expand the Shape under the Lines section as shown below and make the Stroke Width option 0. This will hide the line from the line chart.

This is how we can hide and display the line chart with no line in Power BI.
Power BI line chart with dots
Let us see how we can show the line chart only with the dots in the line chart Power BI,
Yes, we can display the line chart only with the dots or markers and without the line, to achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Make sure the data has been loaded under the Fields section and the fields pane contains the column data presented in the source data.
- Now under the Visualizations pane, select the Line Chart option, you can see that the Line chart is added to the report canvas.
- In this example, we use a Line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the product and country, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Product field. And in the y-axis drag and drop the Sales field.
- In the legend section drag and drop the Country column field as shown below:

- To change the line style, make sure you have added the legend in the line chart visual, Now switch to the Format visual and expand the legend section and select the Lines and Marker style. Now in the same format visual, search for Markers and enable the markers.

- Now expand the section of the line, under the Shape set the stroke width as 0, to see the line chart only with dots or markers.
- And When you increase the stroke width value you can able to see the line in the line chart.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the left-hand side Line chart displays only with the dots or markers when the stroke width is set to 0.
- In the same way, you can see that the right-hand side line chart displays the chart with line and marker when you increase the stroke width value.

This is how we can show the line chart only with the dots in the line chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart gridlines
Let us see how we can enable the horizontal gridline and vertical gridline in the line chart Power BI,
- Under the Gridlines option in the format visuals, we can enable the gridlines, There are two types of gridlines available in the line chart Power BI, they are,
- Horizontal gridline
- Vertical gridline
- We can choose the line style, line color, and line width for the gridlines. At a time we can enable both the horizontal line and vertical line in the line chart Power BI.
Follow the below steps to enable the gridlines in the line chart Power BI:
- Intially, select the line chart for which you want to enable the gridlines. Select the Format visual option under the visualizations.
- Under the Visual settings, search for the Gridlines and expand the Gridline and enable the horizontal gridline option.
- Once the horizontal gridline is enabled we can choose the style of the line, the color of the line, and also the width of the line.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have enabled the horizontal grid line option and changed the default color to blue. In the line chart, we can see that the horizontal gridlines are enabled.

- In the same way, we can also enable the Vertical gridline, Once the vertical gridline is enabled we can choose the style of the line, the color of the line, and also the width of the line.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have enabled the vertical grid line option and changed the default color to blue. In the line chart, we can see that the vertical gridline is enabled.
- We can also reset the values by clicking on the reset to default option.

This is how we can enable the horizontal gridline and vertical gridline in the line chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart join type
Let us discuss what are the join types available and how we can change the join type in the line chart Power BI,
- While formatting the line chart visual, we can notice the Shapes option under the section of the line. Under Shapes, we can notice the Join types. There are three join types available in the line chart visual, they are,
- Miter
- Round
- Bevel
- When you change the join types, we can see changes appear in the stroke width of the line chart visual.
Follow the below steps to change the Join type in line chart Power BI:
- Select the line chart for which you want to change the join type. Select the Format visual option under the visualizations.
- Under the Visual settings, search for the Lines and expand the Lines and expand the Shapes, and choose any of the join type options.
- For example, the below screenshot represents the Miter Join type.

- In the same way, the below-mentioned screenshot represents the Round Join type.

These are the three join types available and this is how we can change the join type in the line chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart Markers
Let us see how to add and change the different types of markers to a line chart in the Power BI,
Follow the below steps to add the line chart Markers Power BI:
- Select the line chart for which you want to add the Markers.
- In this example, we use a Line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the product and country, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the country field. And in the y-axis drag and drop the Sales field.
- In the legend section drag and drop the Product column field as shown below:

- Select the Format visual option under the visualizations. Under the Visual settings, make sure the legend option style is the marker by default.

- In the same visual settings, scroll down and Enable the Marker option, where we can find the different shapes. By default, Markers will be in a circle shape. In the below screenshot, you can see that I have changed the type to a Square shape.

- We can also select Apply settings for the selected product under the series option. And also it is possible to change the type, color, and size of the Marker.
- To reset to the default values, click on the Reset to default option.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have changed the color of the Marker.

This is how to add and change the different types of markers to a line chart in the Power BI.
Power BI line chart legend hierarchy
- No, it is not possible to add legend hierarchy into the legend section with multiple column fields, It is possible to add only one column field in the legend section.
- If the hierarchy has more than one column field then we cannot add it to the legend hierarchy.
- Under the legend, we can add only one column field in the line Chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart quarters
Let us see how we can show the Power BI line chart with quarters,
Yes, it is possible to show the line chart data in the Quarter, which acts as a three-month period in the calendar (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4).
Follow the below steps to display the Power BI line chart with quarters:
- Select the line chart for which you want to display the lines based on the Quarters. In the X-axis field, we have to drag and drop the Date hierarchy column field.
- Once the Date hierarchy is added we have to remove the Year, Date, and Day by selecting the cancel icon.
- So now in the X-axis field, only the Quarter will be presented as shown below: In this example, we will see the sales that occurred based on the quarter.
- In the X-axis field drag and drag the date hierarchy and keep the Quarter option and remove the remaining option. In the Y-axis field simply drag and drop the Sales column field.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the line chart displays the data based on the Quarter.

This is how we can show the Power BI line chart with quarters.
Power BI line chart reverse y-axis
Let us see how we can invert or reverse the Y-axis in the line chart Power BI,
- Select the line chart for which you want to reverse or invert the y axis in the opposite position.
- Select the Format visual option under the visualizations. Under the Visual settings, Expand the Y-axis, under the y-axis expand the Values option and enable the Switch axis position (highlighted below).
- We can also reset the values by clicking on the reset to default option.

- Once the Switch axis position is enabled, we can see that the Profit Y-axis is inverted or reversed in the opposite position of the Y-axis as shown below:

This is how we can invert or reverse the Y-axis in the line chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart y-axis text
Let us see how we can customize or change the line chart y-axis text,
yes, it is possible to change or customize the y-axis text. To achieve this follow the below steps:
- Select the Line chart, for which you want to change the y-axis text, Select the Format visual option under the visualizations.
- Under the Visual settings, Expand the Y-axis, under the y-axis expand the title option, and in the title text field, enter the y-axis text that you want to change or customize. We can also change the color, size, and style of the text.

- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have changed the Y-axis Title text from the Sales to Sales by Year and Month ( highlighted in the y-axis field).
- We can also reset to the default values by selecting the reset to default option.

This is how we can customize or change the line chart y-axis text.
Power BI line chart show zero values
Let us see how we can show the zero values in the Power BI line chart,
- Select the Line chart from the Visualization in Power Bi. Now, in the format visual, under the x-axis, you can see the line chart when the X-axis is categorical.
- Ensure the selected column field has a null or zero value in the loaded data source.
- Now create a measure and apply the below-mentioned formula,
discount total = IF(ISBLANK(SUM(Sheet1[Discounts])),0,SUM(Sheet1[Discounts]))
- In this example, we see the discount total based on the product. For that, simply drag and drop the product column field into the X-axis and the created measure field into the Y-axis as shown below:

- Now in the format visual pane, expand the Y-axis and select the Range option under the range option set the minimum value is 0.
- Once the measure is applied, set the minimum range as 0 and now you can see the zero value shown on the Y-axis of the Power Bi line chart.

This is how we can show the zero values in the Power BI line chart.
Power BI line chart remove axis labels
Let us see how we can remove the axis labels in the line chart power BI,
Yes, it is possible to remove the X-axis, Y-axis, and secondary Y-axis labels, To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the line for which you want to remove the axis labels, Here in the below screenshot you can see, that under the format visual pane, all the three-axis are enabled.
- And it is also possible to remove only the title of the axis, expand the axis, and turn off the title option.

- If we want to remove the x-axis label, Just disable the X-axis toggle control. It will remove only the label and not the title from the line chart as shown below:

- In the same way, If we want to remove the y-axis label, Just disable the y-axis toggle control. It will remove only the label and not the title from the line chart as shown below:

- In the same way, If we want to remove the secondary y-axis label, Just disable the secondary y-axis toggle control. It will remove only the label and not the title from the line chart as shown below:

This is how we can remove the axis labels in the line chart power BI.
Power BI line chart log scale
Let us see how we can use the logarithmic scale in the Line Chart Power BI,
Yes, we can use the logarithmic scale in the line chart Power BI, follow the steps to achieve this,
- Select the line chart for which you want to enable the logarithmic scale, under the format visual pane, expand the Y-axis section, and Enable the logarithmic scale under the range section as shown below:

- The Logarithmic scale will be disabled if we add the Minimum and Maximum values under the Range Section.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have added the minimum and maximum values in their fields and the logarithmic scale option gets disabled.

This is how we can use the logarithmic scale in the Line Chart Power BI.
Power Bi line chart Forecast
Let us see how we can apply the Forecast feature in the Power BI Line chart,
- Yes, we can apply the forecast feature in the line only if we have time data in our data source.
- The forecasting feature is only available for line chart visuals.
Follow the below steps to apply the forecast in the line chart:
- Select the line chart which has time data in the data source to apply the forecast feature.
- In the Visualizations, select the analytics pane option and enable the Forecast option. Once the forecast is enabled, we can see the forecast applied for the line chart visual.

- Under the Forecast, we can see another three options, the forecast option, the Forecast line, and the Confidence band.
- Forecast Option: In the forecast option, we can select the forecast unit, length, and the confidence interval, only the changes are done click on the apply button, so that the line chart displays the changes applied.

- Forecast line: Under the forecast line, we can change the color of the line, the size of the line, and the transparency of the line.
- Confidence band: In the confidence band, we can choose any one of the styles as fill, line, or none.
- We also have an option to reset to the default values by selecting the reset to default option.

In the below screenshot, you can see that the line displays the forecast value for the condition applied.

This is how we can apply the Forecast feature in the Power BI Line chart.
Power BI line chart forecast is not available
- The forecasting feature is only available for line chart visuals. It will not be available for the remaining visuals.
- This is the reason the forecast is missing in the remaining visuals, we can only see the forecast feature under the analytics pane in the line chart visual.
Power BI line chart Y-axis range
Let us see how we can change the Y-axis interval in the line chart Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to customize the smaller interval like 5,10,15, and so on. We can easily fix the Y-axis range to set the custom interval. To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the line chart for which you want to set the interval, Under the format, visual pane, expand the Y-axis, In the range section set the range values that you want to display in the line chart.
- We also have an option to reset to the default values.

- In this example, I have set the interval’s minimum range value as 5 and the maximum range value as 25 under the Y-axis range section.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that the intervals are set between 5 to 25 in the line chart:

Power BI line chart reverse x-axis
Let us see how we can invert or reverse the X-axis in the line chart Power BI,
- Directly we cannot inverse or revert the X-axis, In the format visual pane, expand the x-axis and change the type from continuous to categorical type.
- Select the Line chart and click on the ellipsis in the upper right. Now select the Sort axis and choose the X-axis data field. And also you can see we can sort the X-axis either in the Sort ascending manner (A to Z) or Sort descending manner(Z to A).
This is how we can invert or reverse the X-axis in the line chart Power BI.
Power BI line chart order by date
Let us see how we can sort the line chart based on the date in the Power BI line chart,
Yes, it is possible to order by the line chart visual based on the date in Power BI. Follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the Line chart, In the X-axis field drag and drop the date hierarchy and choose the date, and in the Y-axis field drag and drop the Sales column field as shown below:

- In the format visual pane, Under the visual settings, expand the x-axis and change the type from continuous type to categorical type.

- Select the Line chart and click on the ellipsis in the upper right. Now select the Sort axis and choose the X-axis date field. And also you can see we can sort the X-axis either in the Sort ascending manner (A to Z) or Sort descending manner(Z to A).

In the below screenshot, you can see that I have ordered based on the date in the line chart Power BI.

Power BI line chart with multiple legends
- No, it is not possible to add two or more legends in the line Chart Power BI. We can only add one column field under the legend section in the Line chart Power BI.
- Even if we create a field hierarchy and add that into the legend section also it will take only one column field in the legend.
Power BI line chart reference line
Let us see how we can add the reference line in the Power BI line chart,
Yes, it is possible to add the reference line in the line chart, follow the steps to achieve this:
- Select the line chart that you have created, In the right-hand side you can see the visualizations, you can find the analytics icon under the visualizations.
- In this example, I am going to show the Aline. We can add one or more reference lines in the line chart visual.

- Expand the Average line, and select + Add line under the application settings to option. Once the line is added, Under the series, select the series for which you want to add a reference line. Here I have selected the Sales column field.
- Under the Line Option, we can change the color of the line, Transparency, and also the line style that we want to display for the reference line in the Power BI line chart.
- If we want to enable a data label, by default the data label will be turned off. If we want to know the data then we have to enable it as shown below:

This is how we can add the reference line in the Power BI line chart.
Power BI line chart hours
Let us see how we can display the Time in the Power BI line chart,
Yes, it is possible to display the time in the Power BI line chart, To achieve this follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Initially make sure that you have changed or transformed the data type from the Date/Time to Time data type.
- Select the line chart which has time data in the data source, In the X-axis field drag and drop the Time column, and in the Y-axis field drag and drop the Sales column field as shown below:

- In the below screenshot, you can see that the line chart displays the time with hours, minutes, and seconds based on the sales that occurred. In addition, we can also format the Time if we want to change it.

Power BI line chart from two tables
Let us see how we can display Multiple tables graphed on a single line chart in Power BI,
Yes, it is possible to display the line chart data from two different tables. Follow the below steps:
- Intially, we want to know about the relationships, if we want to show the line chart data from the two different tables. There are four Cardinality, they are,
- One-to-many (1:*)
- Many-to-one (*:1)
- One-to-one (1:1)
- Many-to-many (*:*).
- Now select the line chart and in the Model section (highlighted below), choose the columns and select the relationship.
- Here Sheet1 is one table, and the financials is another table in this example, here I have added many to many relationships.

- Now select the Report section, In the line chart, in the x-axis field drag and drop the product column from the financials table. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales column from the Sheet1 table.

- In the below screenshot, you can see the line charts display the values based on the two different tables.

This is how we can display Multiple tables graphed on a single line chart in Power BI.
Power BI line chart without aggregation
Let us see how we can show the line chart in Power BI without aggregation,
Yes, we can show the line chart without aggregation(sum/count/ average, etc). Follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the line chart in the Power BI, On the X-axis add the column field and on the Y-axis it needs the field value to display the line chart.
- Make sure you have selected the summarized column in the y-axis field so that it will display the values that are presented in the data model.
- In the below screenshot, you can see that I have added the X-axis field Product and in the Y-axis field Sales column which is Summarized(highlighted below):

- If you have selected the Unsummarized column in the y-axis field, it will display the aggregated values like count, etc., as shown below:

To show the Power BI line chart, without aggregation, we have to choose the Summarized column field in the Y-axis values.

Follow the below steps to enable the Zoom slider in the line chart:
- Select the Line chart for which you want to enable the Zoom slider, In the format visual pane, under the visual settings, enable the Zoom slider option.

- To enable the Slider Labels and Slider Tooltip, we have to expand the Zoon Slider option, when we use the Zoom bar to select a particular period, it displays the data for the selected period in the line chart.
- We can reset to the default values, by selecting the reset to default option.

Yes, it is possible to display the Power BI line chart data for the last 12 months by applying a filter, To achieve this, follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Select the Line Chart Under the visualization, In this example, we use a line chart to see the sales that occurred based on the date, for that in the X-axis field drag and drop the Date field. And in the Y-axis field drag and drop the sales field.

- Now, expand the filter pane to apply a filter for the last 12 months, Select the filter type as Relative date, and choose the value as is in the last enter the number that you want to calculate, here I want to display for the last 12 months so I have entered the value as 12.
- Click on the Apply filter to display data only for the 12 months in a line chart.
