Change Browser Tab Title in SharePoint – 2 Easiest Ways

Recently, I created an intranet portal for one of my clients. They had a specific requirement: when users open any SharePoint site home page, the browser tab shouldn’t just display the default Site Name – Home. Instead, they wanted it to show the Site Name followed by the Company Name as shown below.

In this tutorial, I will show you:

• Change the default browser tab title on a SharePoint home page
• Set a custom page as the homepage in SharePoint

Change the Browser Tab Title in SharePoint

By default, SharePoint displays the site name along with the page title in the browser tab. To customise it, follow these steps:

1. Go to your SharePoint site and go to Settings -> Site Contents.

2. Open the Site Pages library.

3. Select your homepage (usually Home.aspx). Click the Details to open the page details pane.

4. Edit the Title field. For example, change it from Site Name – Home to Site Name | Company Name.

5. To Republish the page, right-click on the Home.aspx page, then choose More > Publish

Once published, the browser tab will display your new title.

Note:

Now the browser tab shows Document Management System – DMS – TSinfo, that’s because it includes the site name as well as the page title. To display it as DMS – TSinfo, first make sure your site name is set to DMS, then go to the Site Pages library and set the page title to TSinfo.

If you leave the page title blank, it will show that you are locked into this naming convention.

Set a Custom Page as the Homepage

For this example, I’m using a page created from a template and named Document Management.

If you want a different page to act as your homepage and display a custom browser-tab title, follow these steps:

1. Go to Site Contents -> Site Pages.
2. Right-click the new page and select Make homepage.

Now our SharePoint site will open this page by default, and the browser tab will display the custom title we set.

Now you can set the custom browser tab title in SharePoint to your company’s branding and make navigation clearer for users.
