If you’ve opened Microsoft Teams one morning and the Chat icon has just vanished from the sidebar, trust me, you’re not alone. I’ve seen this question pop up constantly in Teams forums, IT helpdesks, and community threads. The good news is that in most cases, it’s not a serious problem. It’s usually a layout change, a policy setting, or a simple cache glitch, and it can be fixed in minutes.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through every possible reason your Teams chat icon might be missing and exactly how to bring it back. I’ll cover desktop, mobile, and even admin-level fixes, so no matter which scenario you’re in, you’ll find your answer here.
Why Does the Chat Icon Disappear?
Before jumping into fixes, let me quickly explain the most common reasons this happens. Knowing the “why” makes it much easier to apply the right fix.
- Microsoft’s new Chat and Channels experience merged the Chat and Teams tabs into one view — this makes the standalone Chat icon disappear by design
- The Chat app got unpinned from your sidebar accidentally
- An admin policy disabled chat for your account or organization
- A corrupted cache caused a layout glitch
- A Teams update changed the UI layout without warning
- Chat was disabled in meeting settings (specific to meeting chat icons)
Let me now go through each fix, one by one.
How to Fix Microsoft Teams Chat Icon Missing
Now I will tell you a different way to fix the Microsoft Teams chat icon missing.
Fix 1: Check If You’re on the New Chat and Channels Experience
This is the #1 reason people suddenly can’t find the Chat icon, and it catches many people off guard.
Microsoft rolled out a redesigned experience that merges your Chats, Teams, and Channels into a single unified view under the Chat section. When this kicks in, the separate “Teams” icon (and sometimes the visible Chat entry point) disappears from the left sidebar because everything now lives under one roof.
Here’s how to check if this is what happened to you:
- Open Microsoft Teams
- Look at the left sidebar — if you see a combined list of both chat conversations and channels in the same panel, you’re on the new experience
- You might also see a notification that says something like “Your chats and channels are now in one place”
If you want to revert to the old separate view:
- Click the three-dot menu (…) at the top right of Teams (the “Settings and more” button)
- Look for an option to turn off the new Chat and Channels experience
- Select a reason and confirm
If that option isn’t visible anymore (Microsoft has been gradually removing the toggle), try this:
- Go to Settings (click your profile picture > Settings, or press Ctrl + ,)
- Select Chats and Channels from the left menu
- Under “Chat view,” choose Separate instead of Combined
- Restart Teams

This should bring back the familiar sidebar layout with Chat and Teams as separate sections.
Fix 2: Re-Pin the Chat Icon to the Sidebar in Microsoft Teams
Sometimes the Chat icon doesn’t disappear entirely; it just gets unpinned from the sidebar. This can happen after an update or if someone accidentally removed it.
Here’s how to get it back:
- Look at the left sidebar and find the three-dot icon (…) labeled “More apps” or “More”
- Click it a flyout list of apps will appear
- Scroll through the list and look for Chat
- When you find it, right-click on Chat and select Pin
- The Chat icon will immediately reappear in your sidebar

If Chat doesn’t show up in that list at all, it’s likely a policy issue (covered in Fix 4 below), or the cache needs clearing (Fix 3).
On mobile (iOS or Android):
- Tap the three dots (…) or “More” option in the bottom navigation bar
- Look for Chat in the list
- Tap and hold, then drag it back to the main navigation bar
Fix 3: Clear the Teams Cache
This one fixes a lot of mysterious Teams behavior — including missing icons, weird layout glitches, and buttons that just won’t show up. The cache is basically stored data that Teams keeps locally to load faster. Sometimes that data gets corrupted or outdated, and clearing it forces Teams to start fresh.
For New Teams on Windows:
- Fully close Teams — right-click the Teams icon in the system tray and select Quit
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog
- Type the following path and hit Enter:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams - Delete all the files and folders inside that directory
- Restart Teams and sign in again

For Classic Teams on Windows:
- Quit Teams completely
- Press Windows + R
- Type:text
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams - Delete the contents of the folder (you can select all with Ctrl+A, then delete)
- Restart Teams
After the cache clears, Teams will reload everything from scratch. Your Chat icon should be back in place. Note: you won’t lose your messages or conversations — those are stored in the cloud, not locally.
Fix 4: Check If an Admin Policy Has Disabled Chat in Teams
If you’re using Teams through your company or organization, there’s a chance your IT admin has restricted the Chat feature using an App Setup Policy. When this happens, the Chat icon is completely removed from your sidebar — and you can’t bring it back yourself because it’s controlled at the admin level.
How to tell if this is the case:
- The Chat icon is gone and doesn’t appear under “More apps” either
- When someone tries to message you, they see a note like “Administrator has disabled chat for this user”
- Other people in your organization also have the same issue
If you’re the Teams admin, here’s how to fix it:
- Go to the Microsoft Teams Admin Center at admin.teams.microsoft.com
- In the left menu, go to Teams apps > Setup policies
- Open the policy assigned to the affected users
- Under Pinned apps, check if Chat is listed
- If it’s not there, click Add apps, search for Chat, and add it
- Click Save

Changes can take up to a few hours to reflect across all user accounts, so give it some time after saving.
If you’re not the admin, reach out to your IT department and ask them to check the App Setup Policy for your account. Share this article with them if it helps.
Fix 5: Fix the Chat Icon Missing in Teams Meetings
This is a slightly different scenario — the Chat icon goes missing inside a meeting, not on the main sidebar. You’ve joined a call, and the chat panel button is nowhere on the meeting toolbar.
This usually happens because:
- The meeting organizer or admin disabled chat for the meeting
- You joined as a guest or anonymous user and chat is restricted
- The meeting was created when chat was turned off and the setting wasn’t updated
Quick fix during the meeting:
- Look at the top toolbar during a meeting — the chat icon usually looks like a speech bubble
- If it’s not there, try clicking the three dots (…) on the meeting toolbar — sometimes it’s hidden there
If you’re an admin and want to turn meeting chat back on:
- Go to the Teams Admin Center
- Navigate to Meetings > Meeting policies
- Select the policy applied to your users
- Find the Meeting engagement section
- Set Meeting chat to On for everyone
- Hit Save
- Ask users to restart Teams and create a new meeting to test

Keep in mind: changing this setting won’t restore chat in meetings that were already created with chat disabled. A fresh meeting needs to be scheduled after the policy change.
Fix 6: Sign Out and Sign Back In to Teams
Sometimes all Teams needs is a fresh session. It sounds almost too simple, but signing out and back in clears the current session state and forces Teams to reload your profile and app settings.
Here’s how:
- Click your profile picture in the top right corner of Teams
- Select Sign out
- Fully close the Teams app
- Reopen Teams and sign back in with your work account

This is especially helpful after an admin makes a policy change, since Teams sometimes doesn’t pick up new settings until you start a fresh session.
Fix 7: Update or Reinstall Microsoft Teams
Running an older version of Teams can sometimes cause features to go missing, especially if Microsoft pushed an update that changed the layout and your client didn’t get it cleanly.
To update Teams:
- Click your profile picture
- Look for Check for updates or Update available
- Let the update install and restart Teams

To reinstall Teams (last resort):
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program
- Find Microsoft Teams and uninstall it
- Download the latest version from teams.microsoft.com
- Install and sign in
Reinstalling is a clean slate option — use it only if nothing else has worked.
Fix 8: Try Teams on the Web
If you need to get back to your chats urgently and nothing on the desktop app is working, the web version is your fastest workaround.
- Open your browser and go to teams.microsoft.com
- Sign in with your Microsoft account
- The web version tends to be less affected by local cache or desktop app glitches
This doesn’t fix the underlying issue, but it keeps you productive while you troubleshoot.
Quick Recap: Which Fix to Try First?
Here’s a simple decision flow to save you time:
- Icon disappeared after an update? → Try Fix 1 (new Chat and Channels experience)
- Icon is just not pinned? → Fix 2 (re-pin from More apps)
- Layout looks glitchy or broken? → Fix 3 (clear cache)
- Only happens in meetings? → Fix 5 (meeting chat policy)
- Gone for multiple people in the org? → Fix 4 (admin policy)
- Nothing else works? → Fix 7 or 8
In my experience, about 80% of the time this comes down to either the new combined view (Fix 1) or a simple cache clear (Fix 3). Start there, and you’ll most likely be sorted within five minutes.
