SharePoint Online tutorial contents:
This SharePoint Refinement Web part helps users to refine search results from the Search Results Web Part. Users can narrow down the search result what they are looking for.
We can configure the “Refinement web part” properties from the properties tool pane. The Properties settings include
- Which search result in you want to refine using the refinement web part
- What is the refiner we want to use to filler the result
- How we represent the refinement web part in the web part page
Now we will see how we can add a refinement web part on a web part page in SharePoint Online.
To add the “Refinement” web part, first, Open SharePoint Online site, Click on the gear icon (settings) -> Edit Page. Click on “Add a web part” in the Edit page.
Select the search from the “Catagories” section. Under the “Search” we will see “Refinement” in the “Parts” group, select it and Click on “Add”.
We can configure the refinement web part in the “Edit Page” mode. So for that go to “Site Settings” -> “Edit Page”. Go to particular “Refinement web part” which you want to configure. Right click on the dropdown arrow symbol. Then click on “Edit Web Part” from the Refinement web part menu.
In the “Properties for Search Refinement” section under the refinement Target,” we will see a dropdown list which is the collection of all search result web part which is present in that particular web part page.
We need to select here which search result web part we want to refine. I have selected here “Search Result” which I have already added to the web part page.
In the “Refiners” option first check that the “Choose refiners in this Web part” is selected or not. If not then enable it. To choose the “Refiners” clcicked on “Choose Refiners”.
We can add the refiners from the “Available refiners” to “Selected refiners” using “Add”. We can remove also form the “Selected refiners”. Using the “Move up” and “Move down” we can set the refiner position on the web part page. In the “Sample Values” we can notice “docx” and “xlsx” that means only the xl type file and document type file will visible.
We can set the sort type as “Ascending” or “Descending” order in the “Sort Direction” option. The refiner element will sort based on “Count”.
We can set here maximum how many refiners the refiner web part will show in the “Maximum number of refiners” value. We can preview how the refiner will look, in the bottom, one preview button is there. Click on it. Click on Apply and OK.
Here I have filter based on “Author”, “Result type” and “Modified date”. So in the search result only documents are visibe which is word document, author is Padmini Kumari and modified earlier than Today.
Suppose for example we want to display both the xl document and word document in the search result web part, so for that what we will do. At that time the “Multivalue Refinement Item” of refinement web part come in picture.
First go to “Site Settings” ->”Edit Pages”. Go to particular “refinement web part” and go to “Edit web part” page.
In the web part tool pane click on “Choose Refiner”. In the “Selected refiners” select the “FileType”. In the “Display template” dropdown field “Multi-value Refinement Item”. Click on OK.
In the “Search Result web part we will see all the xl and word document which is created by the author Padmini Kumari. For that we need to select the xlsx and docx check box and clcik on Apply.
