This SharePoint Online modern experience tutorial, I am going to explain how to create a modern SharePoint Online list? Also, I will explain a list of SharePoint Online modern list new features in SharePoint Online Office 365.
Learn how to create a SharePoint Online modern list, and various new features of Modern SharePoint Online List. Few new features of SharePoint Online modern list are: Add a Column to list without navigating to another page, easily create an Item in the Modern SharePoint Online List.
Bulk edit in SharePoint Online using Edit List Item feature in Modern SharePoint Online list, Create a Microsoft Flow in Modern SharePoint Online List.
In SharePoint Online modern list, you can use Order by, Group and Filter options to display items in the same page rather navigating to another page.

Here we can create a List in the Modern SharePoint Online Site by using below steps.
Open your Modern SharePoint Online Site. Click the “+New” option which is present at the top of the Modern Site. You will see below options:
- Document Library
- News post
Select the “List” to create List in the new SharePoint Online modern Site like the below screenshot.
The “Create list” form will display in the same page, provide details like “Name”, “Description” etc for creating a List in Modern SharePoint Online Site.
Here in the below screenshot, I have given the List “Name” as “TSEmployeeInfo” and List “Description” as “This is the information list for TS company Employees”.
Then, If you want to See this “TSEmployeeInfo” List in the Site navigation, Then you check to the checkbox “Show in site navigation”.
Then click on to “Create” button for creating the “TSEmployeeInfo” List.
Classic SharePoint list ribbon has been replaced by a command bar in SharePoint Online modern list.
So if you are searching for the ribbon, then you will not get it. SharePoint Online modern list command bar looks like below:
In SharePoint Online modern list, we can not access “List Settings” from ribbon, since ribbon itself is not there.
You can access the List Settings page by using the “Gear” icon or settings icon.
From there you can find the “List settings” or “Library settings” page option like the below screenshot.
We can easily add or create column in SharePoint Online modern list without navigating to another page.
Here “TSEmployeeInfo” List is created like the below screenshot. Now its time to add single or multiple columns into that “TSEmployeeInfo” List. So for creating the column, Go to the “+Add column” which is present at the right side of “Title” column(By default column in SharePoint List). Here you can see the number of columns is present like-
- “Single line of text”
- “Multiple lines of text”
- “Person” etc.
From these several columns, You can choose your column whatever you want like you List basis. Here I have chosen my column as “Person” which is used for retrieving the people picker value.
This will open the Create Column form on the same page, where you need to enter Column Name, Description etc.
Then, If you want to give the type as single or group then select the option as “Person or Group” from the “Type” drop-down field and check the checkbox of “Allow selection of Groups” for selecting the Group.
Here, If you want to allow multiple selections, then you can enable the option as “Allow multiple selections“. Then click on to “Save” option for saving the “TSEmployeeEmailID” Column.
In this way, I have created two more columns like the below screenshot as-
- “EmployeeSalary” (Should be a Number)
- “EmployeeJoiningDate” (should be a Date Column)
#4: Change Column Width by Simple Dragging Column
In this Modern SharePoint Onlne List, We can increase or decrease the width of a List column by using Dragging the column.
Here in the below screenshot, You can see the arrow mark of that “EmployeeEmailID” column which is used for increment or decrement of the column width.
In SharePoint Online modern list, you can easily add an item into the list without navigating to another page.
For creating the item in the Modern SharePoint List, First, click on to the “+New” option which is present at the top of the List. Then an item details form will appear on the same page, where you have to give or fill all the details.
Here in the below screenshot, I have given the name of an employee as “Bijay” in the “Title” field. Then I have given the “EmployeeEmailID” of that Employee which is a people picker column, “50,000” as “EmployeeSalary” and also I have given “EmployeeJoiningDate” which is a Date column.
Finally, If you want to attach any document or any files, then attach it in the “Attachments” field and click on to “Save” option for saving the List Item.
Similarly, In the same process, I have created and saved another four List Items like the below screenshot.
In SharePoint Online modern list we can edit bulk items by using the “Quick edit” option.
If you want to edit, update or modify some list items, then click on “Quick edit” option which is present at the top of the Modern SharePoint List like below screenshot.
After clicking the “Quick edit” option, the list items will be displayed like spreadsheet view like the below screenshot. Here, You can modify or edit your list item whatever you want.
After editing the List item, Just click on to “Exit quick edit” to exit the “Quick edit” which is present at the top of the List.
Another feature of Modern SharePoint List is “Share” option. By using Share option you can share an item to another user.
To share the item, Just select the SharePoint list item and then go to the “Share” option which is present at the top of the List and as well as it is present at the right side of the list item like the below screenshot.
Here in the below screenshot, there is “Send Link” page will appear where we have to enter an Email ID of that person whom you want to give the details of that specific item. Then click on to “Send” option.
After clicking on “Send” option, a message will display like the below screenshot that the item link sent to another user.
We can order the List column as ascending or descending in the Modern SharePoint Online list. Here, I want to sort the column “EmployeeEmailID” in ascending or descending order.
So for making the column as ascending order, Just right click on that column and then click on to “A to Z” which will be an ascending order. Then after the column will appear in ascending order.
Here also we can create a new column by using “Column Settings” option. Just Click on that “Column Settings” option and click on “Add a column”. There you can choose the column as whatever you want like the below black highlighted one.
“Filter By Column” is another new feature in Modern SharePoint List which is used for filter the column value.
For filtering the value of a column, click on to the “EmployeeDepartment” and then click on to the “Filter by” option from that drop-down column like below screenshot.
Then a “Filter by” form will appear where you have to give the filter value whatever you want to filter. Here I want to see the “IT” filter value. So I have chosen the “IT” option. Then click on to “Apply”.
Here in this screenshot, You can see the “IT” Filter value.
Here we can see another new feature in the Modern SharePoint List as “Mandatory Field Validation Notification“. Let’s see the below example.
Here I have created a column by using the “+Add” option which should be a “Choice” column like the below screenshot.
After clicking on “Choice” option, A “Create a column” page will appear where you have to enter the details of a column like:
- Name (Single line of text)
- Description (Multiline of text)
- Type (Choice)
- Choices (HR/IT/FINANCE)
Then set a “Default value” as “None”. In the “More Options”, Select the “Drop-Down Menu” as Display Choice and also enable the option as “Require that this column Contains information”. Then click on to “Save” option for saving the details of the column.
Now, the new choice column is created named as “EmployeeDepartment”. Here in this screenshot, I did not fill that choice column. So a “Required info” notification is appearing in that column. That’s why a yellow mark mandatory field validation is coming at the right side of the List.
So for filling the choice column as “EmployeeDepartment”, Just click on to the “Required info” like below screenshot.
Then, a setting pane will display where you have to enter the Column details of that particular item. Here, Just go to the “EmployeeDepartment” and select the choice field as “IT”. Then it will be saved automatically in the List.
Here in this screenshot, You can see in the below as whatever I have filled that choice column, there the yellow mark validation is gone and whatever I have left, still it is showing the yellow mark validation. If you fill the choice column of all item, Then the yellow marker will not display further.
The new feature of Modern SharePoint List is “Auto-pagination”. Auto-pagination means the page will load automatically when scrolling down. In Classic SharePoint Online list, the paging will appear as Next & Previous page.
But in the “Modern SharePoint Online List”, When you will scroll down the List view page, here the List items will load automatically.
