Power BI Buttons

In this Microsoft Power BI Tutorial, We will discuss What is the Button in Power BI, How to create a button in Power BI Report, What are the different types of buttons are present in Power BI.

Also, We will see what are the button properties, How you can set the properties as idle, hovered or selected. And in this tutorial, I will show you how you can select each individual Power BI Button action.

What is the Power BI Button?

Power BI Button is an object where you can set the action into it like back, Q&A, Bookmark, Information, Help, etc.

By using the Power BI button, You can create reports, dashboards, etc. A user can do some button operations like Button click, hover over with the Power BI content.

In the Power BI Desktop, you can add the buttons to reports and then you can publish or share those reports to the Power BI service to create dashboards.

NOTE:

In the Power BI Desktop only, You can find the Power BI Buttons that can be used in Reports and Dashboards which is provided by the Power BI service.

Create a Power BI Button in Power BI Report

To create a button in the Power BI Desktop, First of all, sign in the Power BI Desktop with your Microsoft account. Once the signing in is completed, Go to the Files tab (which is present in the Ribbon) -> Click on Buttons -> choose any button as per your requirement.

Here you can see different types of Power Bi buttons are present. If you will select one button, then it will show all the functionality options in the Visualization tab. Let me just click on the Q&A button to show the visualizations.

When you will select on any button, then in the Visualization pane ( which is present on the right side of the Power BI Desktop page), it will show all the properties of that button like the below screenshot.

In the Power BI Button, there are some properties which are most important as:

  • Button Text
  • Icon
  • Outline
  • Fill

As per some of the above-required properties, you can customize the button as per your requirement. For example, If you want to show a text on the Button, then you can toggle on the Button Text and if not, then you can toggle off. Similarly, you can also change the button’s icon, title, background, button fill, etc.

Types of Power BI Buttons

There are nine different types of Buttons present in Power BI Desktop such as:

  • Left arrow
  • Right arrow
  • Reset
  • Back
  • Information
  • Help
  • Q&A
  • Bookmark
  • Blank

Here in this Power BI Tutorial, I will explain to you some important buttons like Q&A, Bookmark, Blank, etc.

Q&A Button

If you will select the Q&A button from the button drop-down, then it will help to open the Q&A Explorer window where you can ask the questions.

To create a Q&A Button in Power BI, Go to the Files tab -> Click on Buttons -> Select Q&A button. Once you will click on the Q&A button, then the button will appear with the Visualizations pane as the below screenshot.

In the Power Bi button, there are some properties that are most important to provide into it such as Button Text, Icon, Outline, Fill, Action, etc which I have explained below.

Set Q&A Button Properties

Once you will add a Q&A button, you need to set some button properties as I have explained below.

Button Text:

This Button Text is the first property that is used to operate based upon the button. Before providing all the fields of Button Text, You need to toggle on the Button Text property as like the below screenshot.

In this property, you can select the button as a Default state, On hover, and On press. Also, Enter a name to the Button. That means the button text will appear depends upon the button state as Default, On hover or On press.

Similarly, you can provide the Button Text Font color, Padding, Button Text Alignment, Text Size etc as shown below.

Icon:

This is another property that is based upon only the Button Icon. Here also, you need to toggle on the Icon property to select the state as Default, On hover or On press.

Also, you can select the Icon Shape from the drop-down. If you want to increase the Transparency and Weight, then you can do as like the below screenshot.

Outline:

Button Outline helps to provide the outline to the button. Once you will toggle on the button Outline, then you can provide the Outline color, Transparency, Outline weight, etc.

Fill:

In this Button Fill properties, When you will toggle on the Fill, you can select any state, Fill color, Transparency, etc.

When you will fill any color to the button, then the button will appear with that background color as like below screenshot.

Action:

This is the main property where you can select at what type of action you want to perform in the button. Just toggle on the Action property and select any one type of action to perform the button.

As in the below example, This button is the Q&A type, So I have chosen Q&A as shown below.

To test the button, just do CTRL + click on the button to follow the link.

While you will do CTRL + click on the button, then the Q&A Explorer window will open directly where you can ask your question as shown below.

Bookmark Button

If you will select the Bookmark button from the button drop-down, then it will help to represent the report page which is associated with the bookmark that is defined for the current report.

To create a Q&A Button in Power BI, Go to the Files tab -> Click on Buttons -> Select Bookmark button. Once you will click on the Bookmark button, then the button will appear with the Visualizations pane as the below screenshot.

Set Bookmark Button Properties

Once you will add a Bookmark button, you need to set some button properties as I have explained below.

Button Text:

In this Button Text property, it will help you to provide some name to the button and this property will perform based upon the text. Before providing all the fields of Button Text, You need to toggle on the Button Text property as like the below screenshot.

In this property, you can select the button as a Default state, On hover, and On press. Also, you can enter a name to the Button. That means the button text will appear depends upon the button state as Default, On hover or On press.

As per my requirement, I have selected the Default state. Similarly, you can provide the Button Text Font color, Padding, Button Text Alignment, Text Size etc as shown below.

Icon:

This button icon property is based upon only the Button Icon. Here also, you need to toggle on the Icon property to select the state as Default, On hover or On press as per your requirement.

Also, you can select the Icon Shape as a Bookmark from the drop-down. If you want to increase the Transparency and Weight, then you can do as shown like the below screenshot.

Outline:

Bookmark Button Outline helps to provide the outline to the button. Once you will toggle on the button Outline, then you can provide the Outline color, Transparency, Outline weight, etc. as per your requirement.

Fill:

When you will toggle on the Button Fill, you can select any state, Fill color, Transparency, etc. Once you will provide some color to the button, then the button will appear with that background color.

Action:

In this main property, you can select at what type of action you want to perform in the button. Just toggle on the Action property and select any one type of action to perform the button.

As in the below example, This button is the Bookmark type, So I have chosen Bookmark as shown below. If you want to display any specific bookmark at any time, then you can select your bookmark instead of None.

To specify a bookmark on any page, Go to your required report page (In Power BI Desktop) and click on View (Presented on the top of the page). Check the Bookmarks Pane as like the below screenshot.

When you will check the Bookmarks Pane, then at the same time the Bookmarks pane will appear at the right side of the page. Now you can add the new bookmark by clicking on Add option as like the below screenshot.

You can view all the functionality of that Bookmark when you will click on the dot (Presented on the right side of the Bookmark name) as shown below.

For example, I want to view this below report in the Bookmark. So at first, I need to check the Bookmarks Pane from the View tab and then I have to add the Bookmark with a specific name.

When I will do CTRL + click to the Bookmark button (If in the Action property, the Bookmark field name as Bookmark 2), then this below particular Power BI Report Page will appear.

In the Bookmarks pane, there is another option called View. When you will click on the View option, all the bookmarks will appear in the sliding mode. If you Exit the View, then it will display the same as before.

Blank Button

By taking an example, I will show you how you can use the Blank button in the Power BI Report.

To create a Blank Button in Power BI, Go to the Files tab -> Click on Buttons -> Select Blank button. Once you will click on the Blank button, then the button will appear with the Visualizations pane as like the below screenshot.

In the below screen, you can view there are a total four number of Power BI Reports those are present with the name as Page 1, Page 2, Page 3 and Page 4. I want to show those reports in the left navigation. So that when I will click on any specific page navigation, It will open that particular Report page.

Note:

For this example, You need to add Bookmark on each page with the unique Bookmark name.

For this example, I have added four blank buttons on the left side as navigation which you can see below.

Now I will show you how I have set all the properties in the blank button.

Button Text:

In this property, I have toggled on the property. Then, I have selected the button as a Default state as per my requirement. Also, I have entered a name for the Button. That means the button text is appearing depends upon the button state as Default, On hover or On press.

Similarly, I have provided the Button Text Font color, Padding, Button Text Alignment, Text Size etc as shown below.

Icon:

Here also, I have toggled on the Icon property to select the state as Default, On hover or On press as per my requirement. Also, Selected the Icon Shape as Blank from the drop-down. I have given the Line color, alignment, Transparency etc as the below screenshot.

Action:

As per my example, This button is the Blank type and I want to navigate this button to a specific page, So I have chosen Bookmark as shown below. And I have specified the Bookmark as Bookmark 2 instead of None.

When I have CTRL + click on the Page 2 navigation, then this below reports page was appearing as shown in below.

In the same way, you can add and use any type of Power BI buttons such as: Back, Information, Help, Reset, etc.
