In this SharePoint tutorial, we will discuss the managed path in SharePoint, how to create a managed path in SharePoint 2019/2016/2013.
Managed Path in SharePoint
By using a managed path we can specify paths in the URL namespace of a web application to use for SharePoint site collections. This is known as a managed path in SharePoint.
After you installed SharePoint 2016 then when you will try to create a site collection under a SharePoint web application then the path it will take is http://Servername:port/Site/TestSite. But in real life, we will need a useful URL like:
http://Servername:port/HR
or
http://Servername:port/IT
http://Servername:port/IT/SharePoint
http://Servername:port/IT/Java
Create SharePoint Managed Path
For this type of requirement, we have to create Managed Paths in SharePoint 2016/2013. Managed Paths are specific to a SharePoint web application.
To create a managed path, Open your SharePoint Central Administration. Then click on Manage web applications under Application Management.
This will open the list of web applications, select the particular web application. Then from the ribbon click on Manage -> then Managed Paths as shown in the fig below:

This will open the “Define Managed Paths” dialog box, where by default you can see default paths: (root) (Explicit inclusion)/sites (Wildcard inclusion).
Here we have to Add a New Path. There we can put the path whichever you want, in this case I have put HR.
Then the “Type”. There are two types:
Explicit inclusion
If you do not want to create any further site collections under the specified path then we can use this option. Suppose you gave the path “HR”. Then you will not be able to create a site collection under this http://Servername:port/HR.
Wildcard inclusion
But in Wildcard inclusion you will be able to create further site collections under the managed path. If you have given the path as “IT”. Then you can create site collections like /IT, /IT/SharePoint, /IT/Java.
In this case I have chosen Explicit inclusion and then click on Add Path like below:

It will be appear like below under the paths.

Now create a site collection from the SharePoint central administration. You will be able to see “/hr” path like below:

Now we will try to add a Wildcard inclusion path. So again click on “Managed Paths” under Manage in the ribbon.
In the Define Managed Paths dialog box, give the new path as “IT”. Then in the Type, choose Wildcard inclusion as shown in the fig below:

Now after clicking on add path, the path will be added and will be look like below:

Now if you will try to create a site collection, you will be able to see path as “/IT” then you can give path like IT/SharePoint like below:
