SharePoint Online tutorial contents:
SharePoint site is a web site where we can store the information or documents of the organization. It can have web apps like ‘document library’ where we can store the documents and lists where we can store information.
Similarly, we can create task lists which is used to store lists of any tasks. Calendars to store meetings or events which can be used for various operations in the team.
SharePoint site collection is a collection of SharePoint sites. It will have a top-level site and subsites are present below the top-level site.
While we are creating a site collection in SharePoint 2016, we need to choose a template.
There is presence of 4 groups such as:
- Collaboration: This contains templates as “Team site”, “Developer site”, “Document center”, “Record center” etc.
- Enterprise: This contains templates as: “Document Center”, “Records Center”, “Business Intelligence Center”, “Enterprise Search Center”, “Basic Search Center”, “Visio Process Repository”, “Community Portal” etc.
- Publishing: This contains templates like: “Publishing Portal”, “Enterprise Wiki”, “Product Catalog” etc.
- Custom: This will display custom templates if any.
A blog site is a site that is used to create a blog in the organization by using the SharePoint.
To create a blog site in SharePoint 2016, open SharePoint 2016 central administration. Click on the create site collection in the ‘Application Management’.
Then provide the below details to create a blog site:
- Title
- Description
- URL
- Template (Here select the Blog site template)
Once you click on Create, it will create a blog site and you can check below:
By default blog site will be having few blog related web parts like:
- Blog categories
- Blog tools
- Archive etc.
SharePoint Project site is a site that is used for managing projects in your team.
Now, we will see how to create a project site in SharePoint 2016/2019.
Open SharePoint 2016 central administration, click on Create site collection which is under Application Management.
Then in the Create site collection page, enter the below things:
- Title
- Description
- URL
- Select a template (Here Select Project Site template)
Then click on Create, and it will create the project site like below:
If you will browse or open the SharePoint project site, you will see a site like a team site. But it will be having a few different lists gets created like:
- Tasks list
- Calendar list
- Documents
- Site Assets
- Style library etc.
Apart from this, it will also display a project summery web part, where you can see the progress like below:
A SharePoint Community site is a site that is used for topic discussion with the other team members, for the entire organization.
In a community site, every one can discuss on a topic.
Open SharePoint 2016 central administration, click on Create site collection which is under Application Management.
Then in the Create site collection page, enter the below things:
- Title
- Description
- URL
- Site Template (Here the select the site template as Community site)
While creating a site by using “Community Site” template, it will create a community site which shows the given figure-
As you can see below, in a community site, anyone can start a discussion and other people can join in the discussion.
